The Sandy Fire grew to an estimated 7-10 acres Monday afternoon in the Big Basin area, per a Cal Fire update, with water drops on the way.
Cal Fire crews will spend Tuesday mopping up the 11.75-acre Sandy Fire in the Big Basin Redwoods State Park area of the Santa Cruz Mountains after the agency first reported the blaze Monday evening.
Just after 5:30 p.m. Monday, officials said the ground fire was about 5-7 acres. As of Tuesday morning, crews declared the fire contained at 11.75 acres after crews used helicopters from the neighboring SCU unit helped with water drops on the fire.
Officials said the fire was within “difficult-to-access” terrain in the state park and “did not threaten any structures.”
The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory through 8 p.m. Monday for nearby areas including San Mateo County and the Salinas Valley, and forecast wind gusts at or exceeding 30 mph in the Santa Cruz Mountains through Monday evening. In Sausalito, north of San Francisco, an NWS spotter reported a gust of 50 mph Monday afternoon.
