Honoring 82-year-old Juan Medellín’s legacy as an original company member of Mexico City’s prestigious Ballet Folklórico de Amalia Hernández, Juan de las Brujas is a humble love letter to Mexico born from the director’s first meeting with Medellín on the day of the September 2017 earthquake. With hand-drawn animation illustrating Medellin’s childhood memories and introduction to dance through his heydays with the Ballet during its golden era in the 1960s, the film is both an intimate portrait of a life richly lived and a testament to the power and the force of art.
