About the owners
The McGuire era began here on 15th avenue in 1960 when Dave and Virginia bought the home in the progressive beach development. Dave and Virgina raised their family here. For sure, this property produced a touchstone for the family and the heart of the artistic inspiration from which David McGuire’s talent flared creative inspiration and Black Point Art tours.
Art by David McGuire
In 1958, Dave married Virginia Lee Van Antwerp, and the couple built their home at the end of 15th Avenue in the Live Oak district of Santa Cruz. Over the years, Virginia nurtured a beautiful garden where their children played and was the site of many memorable gatherings with family and friends.

Dave was hired on as the first art instructor at Cabrillo College in 1962, teaching multiple disciplines. A man of diverse talents and interests, Dave was a guiding force in the development of the Cabrillo College art department.
An outspoken and passionate supporter of community colleges, art instruction and students, Dave was responsible for attracting many of Cabrillo’s leading art teachers. Dave chaired the art department multiple times during his 30-year career at Cabrillo. Towards the end of his time at Cabrillo, he came up with the idea of leading watercolor enthusiasts on painting workshops at far-flung locales including Greece, Turkey, Portugal, and Mexico. Many past students, as well as newcomers to watercolor, eagerly awaited the mailings from Black Point Art Tours, signaling yet another awesome adventure.
