42-year-old man shot on Winkle near Soquel Dr.

A 42-year-old man was shot in the abdomen around 7 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Winkle Avenue and Soquel Drive.

Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene outside a house in the 3100 block of Winkle, where police told a photographer for Lookout Santa Cruz that a person had been shot on the street. The shooter ran away.

Deputies were checking nearby businesses for possible surveillance footage when they began heading in the direction of nearby Dominican hospital, about a block away. Sheriff’s squad cars went to that scene, and a law enforcement helicopter aided in the search.

Just after 8 p.m., deputies detained a man about a block away from where the shooting occurred, opposite Dominican hospital. The photographer observed deputies searching the area behind a chain-link fence where the man was found.

But a sheriff’s office spokesperson said Tuesday that the man’s arrest was unrelated to the shooting; he had been wanted on a warrant for a felony crime.

The shooting victim remained hospitalized on Tuesday but was expected to survive. Police were continuing to investigate the case.
