A well-earned week of gratitude for nurses, doctors: Watsonville Hospital set to dole out the appreciation

National Nurses week is May 6-12, and National Hospital Week is May 9-16, so WCH is combining them, along with celebrating a belated Doctor’s Day, which was March 30.

After a year of surging COVID-19 cases forced nurses to fight for adequate staffing safeguards and navigate unexpected changes in management, Watsonville Community Hospital will show its medical staff the love for National Nurses Week.

The hospital will celebrate its medical team with daily events for staff, including an ice cream social, raffle, photo booth, staff-wide breakfast and barbecue over the course of next week.

“Nurses are exceptional people, and they’ve chosen this path to serve,” said Debbie Torrey, WCH project manager. “We’re all working hard but I think we have a lot of good team spirit and camaraderie.”

Appreciating medical professionals takes on a special significance this year, especially in Watsonville where cases of COVID-19 surged at the height of the pandemic.

The community of Watsonville has been sending the love to WCH too. Elementary students from Amesti Elementary School created a video with their art teacher Lucia Herrera, showcasing artwork they made in appreciation for doctors and nurses. The hospital sometimes receives gifts of lunches and flowers from community members.
