Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Foundation celebrating 28th anniversary with virtual awards, film
A short film overseen by Lookout Santa Cruz visual journalism contributor Kevin Painchaud celebrating the work to protect Monterey Bay will be part of a virtual event celebrating the 28th anniversary of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary on Sunday, Dec. 6.
The 2020 Sanctuary Sea Stars Brunch will run from 10 a.m. to 11:30 am. Besides the film’s debut, the event will include awards to people and organizations who have contributed to the sanctuary “through education, conservation, research, and business.”
Proceeds will benefit the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Foundation.

Human rights attorney Haben Girma, the first deafblind person to graduate from Harvard Law School, will serve as keynote speaker.
Her memoir “Haben: The Deafblind Woman Who Conquered Harvard Law” has been featured in The New York Times, Oprah Magazine and on NBC’s TODAY Show. A Bay Area native, she’ll discuss her life, career, and experiences surfing in Monterey Bay.
