Four juveniles charged with attempted murder after Hagemann Ave shooting in Santa Cruz

A shooting near Garfield Park on the Westside on Thursday night was followed by what police are saying is an attempted murder case on the Eastside near Arana Gulch on Friday afternoon.

Santa Cruz Police have arrested four juveniles on charges of “attempted murder with a gang enhancement” for a shooting that occurred Friday afternoon on Hagemann Avenue near Arana Gulch on the Eastside.

The victim, a 34-year-old man, was in stable condition after being transported to a Bay Area trauma center, police said.

It was the second shooting in as many days in Santa Cruz. At around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, an 18-year-old was shot on Seaside Street near Garfield Park on the Westside. That victim was expected to survive, and no arrests have been made.

The juveniles who were arrested in the Friday shooting were detained in South County by the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Team.

According to SCPD, evidence linking them to the shooting includes a firearm that was recovered from their vehicle. Police did not elaborate on the reason for the “gang enhancement” part of the attempted murder charges.

Gang activity is being suspected in other violence in the county so far this year.

On Jan. 7, the county’s first homicide of the year occurred when a 30-year-old Watsonville man was shot in the torso while driving on South Green Valley Road toward Main St. in Watsonville. Watsonville police said they suspected the shooting was gang-related.
