Lookout’s Planned Expansion and Lookout Growth, our consulting practice
Lookout Local is building the West Coast’s next-generation local news and information network — deeply local in each community, but strengthened by shared talent, technology, products and know-how. We launched Lookout Santa Cruz in 2020 and Lookout Eugene-Springfield in 2025, proving that robust local journalism and a strong local business can again be built together. In 2027, Lookout will launch its third market, continuing a strategy of expanding rapidly — and prudently — into communities ready for a new generation of local news.
Our opportunity comes at an extraordinary moment. Legacy local news has retreated across much of the West just as communities need more trustworthy, useful information about where they live. Lookout is filling that opening with something deliberately different: ambitious, nonpartisan local journalism; deep community connection; useful new products and services; and a diversified business model built for the digital and AI age. Each Lookout is intensely of its own community. Together, they increasingly benefit from the scale, learning and innovation of a growing network.
That makes this an especially exciting time to join us. We are assembling journalists, editors, audience builders, product thinkers, business leaders and community connectors who want to do some of the best work of their careers — and help build what local news becomes next. Lookout has already earned national recognition for both its journalism and its emerging model. Now we are accelerating: improving what works, inventing what comes next and taking the model to more communities across the West.
Lookout was founded by Ken Doctor, a veteran journalism and newspaper executive and business of media analyst who believes a community must be served by new trustworthy news sources as purely financial interests have bought up, and decimated, local daily newspapers.
Here, we sum up our expansion plans and launching of Lookout Growth, our consulting arm.
OUR NEWSROOMS
LOOKOUT LOCAL IN THE NEWS
We’re proud to have Lookout Local, Lookout Santa Cruz and Lookout Eugene-Springfield recognized nationally. The national and state press has pointed both to our journalistic accomplishments and to our community-centric business model that is proving out how much authentic local news is and can be revived – both in our own growing markets and by increasing the number of peers. Those peers, now largely rounded up by the Knight Growth Challenge and Google News Initiative Catalyst program, join us in believing mission-driven and business-driven local news is reversing the near-complete washing out of the local press due to hedge fund ownership.
