The Santa Cruz mayoral race sees longtime activist Ami Chen Mills running against former county supervisor and Santa Cruz city mayor Ryan Coonerty.

The race centers on some of Santa Cruz’s most persistent challenges: homelessness, housing affordability, development and the future of downtown. Chen Mills has emphasized neighborhood-scale development, tenant protections and a more personal, community-based approach to homelessness. Coonerty has focused on addressing unmanaged encampments, improving downtown safety and cleanliness, making it easier for businesses to open, and generating more revenue without imposing new taxes.
