A 36-year-old Boulder Creek man died in a single-vehicle crash on southbound Highway 9 at Two Bar Road on Thursday night, after veering off the road and crashing into a tree, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The victim was driving a black 2014 Mazda 3 when a California State Parks ranger attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver did not yield to the officer, according to a CHP release, which led to a brief car chase. For an unknown reason the car veered off the road and crashed into a tree. The driver sustained major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is still under investigation and CHP officials believe that alcohol was a factor in the crash.
