The Democratic Women’s Club of Santa Cruz County is among the organizations sponsoring a forum for California gubernatorial candidates scheduled for next month in Monterey.
Of more than a dozen Democrats running for the nomination to succeed Gavin Newsom as governor, five were confirmed for the March 12 event as of Tuesday: Xavier Becerra, former California attorney general and U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Joe Biden; Ian Calderon, former majority leader in the California Assembly; Matt Mahan, San Jose mayor and a Watsonville native; Tom Steyer, billionaire environmentalist and investor; and Betty Yee, former California state controller.
Organizers said all declared candidates were invited but some had scheduling conflicts.
California’s primary election is June 2, with the top two vote-getters regardless of party preference advancing to the Nov. 3 general election.
What’s currently the only scheduled debate of gubernatorial candidates on the Central Coast will be followed by a Q&A session; attendees can submit questions when they RSVP or during the live session. There is no livestream or video recording planned of the forum, to be moderated by Erica Padilla-Chavez, co-chair of WILDR (Women in Leadership for Diverse Representation).
