Jeff Thomas

Jeff has lived in Santa Cruz for 39 years, a refugee from Minnesota. He loved the quirky vibe and natural beauty so much that he commuted over the hill to San Jose for most of those years just so he could return here each day.

He spent 25 years at the San Jose Mercury News in a variety of jobs, including executive news editor during the 1989 earthquake, and as a writer and columnist (oldsters may remember the allegedly humorous advice column “Male Call: Advice From a Guy.”) He later worked for 13 years at PayPal as a content design writer and manager.

Jeff is excited to be involved, even for a short time, with such a dynamic group of people dedicated to bringing professional news gathering into the non-print age. (Although he wants the record to reflect that he still gets the paper copy of the Mercury News delivered at home.)
