Students are to thank for another significant local fossil discovery, Hillary Ojeda reports, with a bone they found while splashing in a Santa Cruz Mountains creek last spring turning out to be from an ancient sloth – the first time evidence of Jefferson’s ground sloth have been found in our county.

Max Chun has details of a fundraiser this week for one of the groups suing Caltrans over Highway 1 widening in Aptos, at which state Sen. John Laird introduced a former transit official who says she was demoted for objecting to highway expansions.

With his Weekender newsletter coming later Thursday, Wallace Baine is in the house, talking to a pair of local stepsisters whose musical journey finds them debuting a new album next week.
