The Santa Cruz Symphony is thrilled to announce that internationally renowned violinist Nancy Zhou has joined the orchestra as their Artist in Residence and Concertmaster. This prestigious new role reflects Nancy’s exceptional talents as one of the world’s foremost violin virtuosos and highlights her expanded contributions to our music community.
Nancy, the 2018 winner of the Shanghai Isaac Stern Violin Competition, is celebrated for her powerful musical voice and dazzling virtuosity. Her artistry has captivated audiences worldwide, leading her to perform with top orchestras around the globe. Known not only for her mastery of traditional repertoire, Nancy is also an avid chamber musician and advocate for nontraditional works, often blending music with other art forms such as dance and cultural expression. In addition to her performances, Nancy is deeply committed to mentoring young musicians and fostering new artistic projects.

As Concertmaster, Nancy will take on a creative leadership role within the orchestra, curating chamber music programs and spearheading special engagements throughout the season. Her expertise and innovative spirit will enrich the Symphony’s musical offerings, creating new experiences for our audiences.
Nancy will officially debut as Concertmaster in three exciting programs during the 2023-24 season:
- October 21-22, 2023: A thrilling concert featuring overtures by Mozart, Rossini, Beethoven, and Verdi, alongside Bizet’s Carmen Suites 1 & 2. Nancy Zhou will be the featured soloist for Waxman’s Carmen Fantasie.
- March 23-24, 2024: A dynamic program including Jose Granero’s Matsuri Overture, Schumann’s Cello Concerto, and Stravinsky’s Petrushka.
- June 8, 2024: A special concert dedicated to the music of John Williams.
While Nancy will fully assume her duties as Concertmaster for the 2024-25 season, Santa Cruz Symphony is are honored to introduce her during these upcoming performances. They also extend their deepest gratitude to former Concertmaster, Nigel Armstrong, whose extraordinary musicianship has greatly enriched the Symphony. Nigel will perform with one last time as Concertmaster for their season opener, Echoes of Empire, on September 23 and 24, 2023.
