Every week in Santa Cruz County, older adults and people with disabilities miss critical doctor’s appointments, skip meals, or go days without meaningful human contact — because they don’t have a ride.

Carol is 88 years old and lives alone with limited eyesight and no nearby family. Volunteer drivers take her to medical appointments and walk her from the car to her door. Without that help, she says, the alternative would be a nursing home.

“I have nobody in the world but myself… this has saved me.”

The Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County is looking for caring neighbors willing to get behind the wheel — and Carol is exactly who you’d be driving for.

1. You’ll change a life with just one ride.

What looks like a simple errand is often a turning point for someone else. A ride to the doctor might mean catching a serious issue early. A trip to a social group might be someone’s only chance to connect that week. Small act. Real impact.

2. You set the schedule. The Volunteer Center does the rest.

Drive your own car and choose your availability. Once a week, a few times a month — whatever works for you. The Volunteer Center matches you with someone who needs a ride when you’re ready.

3. Mileage reimbursement is provided.

The miles are covered. You just bring the company.

4. You’ll make real connections.

Drivers consistently say they get as much out of the experience as the people they drive. You’re not just moving someone from point A to point B — you’re showing up as a trusted, friendly presence in someone’s week.

5. You’ll help keep Santa Cruz County connected.

Transportation isn’t just logistics — it’s equity, dignity, and the difference between isolation and belonging. When you volunteer, you’re part of something bigger than a single ride.
