For five consecutive nights beginning Sunday, Sept. 15, the left lane in both the north- and southbound directions of Highway 1 between 41st Avenue in Capitola and Soquel Drive in Santa Cruz will be closed. Northbound overnight lane closures will be in effect from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., with southbound closures in effect 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. According to the California Department of Transportation, motorists should expect delays of up to 10 minutes.
The last overnight closures for the week begin Thursday, Sept. 19, and when crews open both lanes of travel the morning of Friday, Sept. 20, there will be no lane restrictions for the remainder of the weekend.
The closures will accommodate construction on a continuing project to construct north- and southbound auxiliary lanes and bus-on-shoulder improvements on Highway 1 between the 41st Avenue and Soquel Drive interchanges and to construct a new bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing at Chanticleer Avenue.
Starting Sunday, crews will begin the next phase of construction, which will involve the widening of the center median and construction of concrete barriers.
