Quick Take
Lookout photojournalist Kevin Painchaud goes under the big top in the Capitola Mall parking lot as Mendocino's Flynn Creek Circus presents its latest show.
As holiday traditions take center stage, the Flynn Creek Circus has returned to the Capitola Mall for its annual season, bringing theatrical magic and acrobatic thrills to local audiences through Jan. 4.
The Mendocino-based circus troupe has made its performances as much a part of the holidays as decorated trees and crackling fireplaces. This year’s production, titled “The Bridge,” draws inspiration from Nordic legend and features what the company describes as its most ambitious acrobatic work to date.
A tale of trolls and connection
“The Bridge” weaves together a classic wolf legend with themes of architectural connection, narrated through the perspective of a troll’s goat and his stubborn shadow. The production maintains Flynn Creek Circus’ signature blend of physical comedy, theatrical storytelling and family-friendly entertainment — all without the use of animals.
Flynn Creek Circus co-founder David Jones says the show has “huge acrobatic stunts like never before,” and delivers the irreverent humor and unexpected moments that have become the troupe’s hallmark.
