I read a recent Lookout op-ed advocating for Flock Safety cameras. I disagree and I would like to add one possible use that is a strong reason to eliminate their use.
The op-ed points out several reasons that have already been documented, including errors, law-enforcement personnel and using Flock cameras for totally unrelated and personal reasons.
It is obvious that the federal government under Donald Trump is out for revenge against anything and anyone the president feels deserves it. This is especially true of California and other Democratic-leaning states. Handing over a way for the federal government to track the majority of people in our state is frightening to me. There is much evidence that the current federal government ignores legal safeguards and judicial decisions in this country and any safeguards erected would be bypassed eventually.
The only way to remove the possibility of misuse of these cameras for widespread surveillance is to remove them.
I realize they help with law enforcement, but I have no desire to live in a country that can track everyone it chooses. Privacy in this country is already compromised by other technology able to follow us daily. We don’t need to add cameras following us wherever we go.
