Santa Cruz County Animal Control is trying to locate a cat that might be trapped in a drain system at a construction site on Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz.

A social media post from the county animal shelter said that the agency’s dispatch office has been “flooded with calls about a cat being heard from a construction site at 902 Pacific Avenue.” Animal control responded to the scene and coordinated with the Echelcon construction crew.

Animal control officers lowered a trap into the drain system where they believe the cat could be stuck, according to the post.

County animal shelter general manager Amber Rowland said someone first heard the cat meowing and reported it after hours on Saturday, but no one provided a verifiable address until Monday. She said that animal control placed the trap on Tuesday morning, but as of Wednesday afternoon, the cat had not entered the trap.

Rowland said animal control staff showed construction workers on site how to check the trap and provided contact information in case they find the cat.

She added that an adjacent building does have “catios,” screened-in structures where housecats can observe the outside world without endangering themselves in the street or harming local wildlife. She said it’s possible a cat could be vocalizing from that location, and the sound is echoing through the construction site, but workers will continue monitoring the site and checking the trap.
