The Santa Cruz County Music Teachers’ Association is offering scholarships to highly motivated music students whose families are unable to pay for private lessons.

Students can study piano, voice, violin, viola, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, and trumpet under distinguished instructors. Lessons for other instruments are subject to teacher availability, but interested students are still encouraged to apply.

Students should have access to a practice instrument and transportation to weekly lessons. The application includes a brief financial statement. Families are responsible for the costs of educational materials, which are about $25 per year.

Both homeschooled residents and students enrolled in Santa Cruz County schools in grades 2 through 12 are eligible to apply. Applications are due May 15, 2025, for the 2025-2026 school year.

The program has drawn strong praise from the Music Teachers’ Association of California. More than $140,000 in scholarships has been awarded to students since 1995. Participating teachers have donated the same through discounted tuition. More than half of students who received an opportunity grant scholarship in the past have been from communities of color.
