Visitors to and residents of Capitola Village might have noticed a new feature in the landscape. Santa Cruz artist Geoffrey Nelson has recently installed his new piece, “Beguiling Begonias,” at the tiny Soquel Creek Park on the corner of Wharf Road and East Cliff Drive, next to the Stockton Avenue Bridge.
The 8-foot tall-sculpture, commissioned by the Capitola Arts Commission, celebrates the Capitola Begonia Festival, the highlight of which was the popular Begonia Festival Parade of floats on Soquel Creek. The festival was held for more than 60 years in Capitola Village, until its closing in 2017.
