The City of Capitola has installed informational signage on the Capitola Wharf at viewpoints overlooking the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The signage is one of many new additions to the wharf after powerful northwest swells tore away its middle section in January 2023.
The signage includes an informational kiosk and four panels, incorporating the history of the wharf, fishing, surfing and wildlife, along with a map of the submarine Monterey Canyon.
Bronze marine life pieces designed and created by artist Sean M. Monaghan, who runs the Bronze Works Fine Arts Foundry in Santa Cruz, are featured along the signs and wharf decking, highlighting the various ecosystems of Monterey Bay.
A grant from the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Foundation partially funded the design and installation of the signs. The project was designed in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the Capitola Historical Museum and the nonprofit Save the Waves Coalition.
