A celebration of life to remember Santa Cruz musician and creative Oliver Tree will take place this Saturday evening at the Quarry Amphitheater on the UC Santa Cruz campus.
From 7:30 to 10:30 p.m., the program and livestream will feature live music, videos of Tree’s life and several speakers, including his family members and friends, according to a post on his Instagram account.
Tree died on June 14 at the age of 32 in a helicopter crash in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, alongside five other people. He was on his “The World’s First World Tour,” where he had set out to perform on all seven continents.
Born Oliver Tree Nickell in Santa Cruz, on June 29, 1993, he was a prolific artist, songwriter, comedian and singer who wrote alt-pop hits like “When I’m Down,” “Life Goes On” and “Miss You.” Among his many personas, Tree was known for his signature bowl haircut, scooter-riding skills, purple and red jacket and giant denim pants.
Months before his death, Tree announced his will was made and that in the case of his death, all of his money would go to a foundation called Dr. Oliver Tree’s Extremely Epic Art Grant For Baby Geniuses.
“When I die, all the money is gonna go back to artists,” he said on the “Zach Sang Show.” “I want it to go to the actual physical making of art.”
