The Santa Cruz Symphony is gearing up to host a series of Festivals concerts on March 23rd and 24th, just after the spring equinox, marking a significant turning point in the year. Music enthusiasts are invited to celebrate the renewal of warmth and the promise of spring with an enchanting lineup of performances featuring works by Granero, Schumann, and Stravinsky.
José González Granero’s Matsuri Overture sets the stage for the festivities, drawing inspiration from Kyoto’s Ebisu Festival. This vibrant composition, penned in 2017, captures the essence of ancient traditions blending harmoniously with modern life. Aptly named “Matsuri,” meaning festival in Japanese, the overture evokes feelings of comfort, prayer, and gratitude associated with this auspicious occasion. Dedicated to the god of good luck and business prosperity, the Ebisu Festival is a time-honored event where thousands gather to seek blessings and overcome adversities with cheerful perseverance. Granero’s overture offers listeners a glimpse into the beauty and ambiance of Kyoto during this unique celebration.

Next on the program is Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto, composed in 1850. Demonstrating Schumann’s compositional genius, this masterpiece takes audiences on an emotional journey characterized by its extended arc and powerful character development. Despite remaining unperformed during Schumann’s lifetime, this “lost masterpiece” has since garnered acclaim as one of the great Romantic works for the cello. Award-winning soloist Gaeun Kim will grace the stage, captivating listeners with her interpretation of the concerto’s poetic depth and leading them to a thrilling conclusion.
Finally, audiences will be treated to Igor Stravinsky’s Petrushka, a dynamic ballet that finds its true voice in musical expressions of physical movement. Conceived in 1910, this iconic work tells the tale of a deadly love triangle among puppets who come to life. Praised for its sophisticated theatrical folklorism, Petrushka follows the mischievous clown’s exhilarating journey as he challenges societal norms and ultimately has the last laugh. Through Stravinsky’s innovative storytelling and the recurring motif of the “Petrushka chord,” listeners will be transported into a world of whimsy and intrigue.
The Santa Cruz Symphony invites music enthusiasts to share in the magic of these lush compositions, celebrating the arrival of spring and embracing the promise of new beginnings. With an evening filled with festive, passionate, and occasionally explosive works, attendees are guaranteed an unforgettable experience that resonates with the spirit of the season. It’s a concert series not to be missed!
