In Sara Swenson’s Lookout op-ed, she mentions the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County in relation to the “low impact camping area,” aka LICA, ordinance that the county is developing. Specifically, the author says, “I hope private property owners can keep their listings on camping sites and that organizations like the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County can offer sites on its amazing land so we can have weekend adventures to explore our county. With its focus on nature and recreation, Santa Cruz should lead the way on this.”

Our executive director, Sarah Newkirk, wrote a letter supporting the LICA ordinance, but her letter makes clear that the Land Trust does not offer, and does not plan to offer, paid campsites on our lands. We manage several public access properties across the county that are free for all to enjoy nature, hike and on some trails, bicycle or ride horses.
