Your recent article by Caly Luna Plowman on the price of gas impacting “Santa Cruz’s vehicular homeless” misses the actual problem.
All of the subjects interviewed in the article were homeless before relocating to Santa Cruz, but came to the county with the nation’s highest rental prices anyway. Day Pollini has an RV she lives in, a second car and a part-time job in Portola Valley. She could save the money she spends on gas to get to Portola Valley from Santa Cruz simply by moving her RV there and parking it in front of her employer.
It seems though that instead of highlighting the plight of people already experiencing homelessness moving to Santa Cruz and facing the same high gas prices we all are would be to highlight the issue of how hard it is for actual local residents experiencing homelessness to get the services and help they need because many of these very limited services and help programs are being taken by newly arrived homeless.
