We were reminded that rail is the safest way to move goods by the accident of a tanker truck on Highway 17 last week. It showed how dangerous trucks are. By contrast, look at the economic, safety and environmental benefits of moving goods by rail. Anything being trucked in over 17 could come in by rail freight when the branch line is repaired.

One gallon of fuel will move a ton of freight three to four times further by rail than by truck, and this efficiency applies to zero-emission rail and truck technologies.

Last week, West Sacramento became home to the nation’s first hydrogen-powered zero-emission locomotive, a development that could transform freight movement in California and the country.

This is excellent news for our community as well. Let’s make sure the Santa Cruz Regional Transportation Commission keeps our rail line in good repair and capable of delivering freight service while continuing to plan for passenger service and completion of the Coastal Rail Trail.
