A fire that broke out Sunday in a Sycamore Street townhome was quickly contained thanks to a fast action by neighbors and firefighters.
Santa Cruz Fire Department responded to reports of smoke at 111 Sycamore St., Unit 106, near Pacific Avenue. Fire crews arrived to find smoke billowing from a row of townhomes, according to a press release by the fire department.
The residents had returned home to discover a blaze near the oven in the kitchen. Neighbors used two fire extinguishers to slow the spread before leaving the unit.
Firefighters entered the home, ensured everyone was safely out and extinguished the remaining fire. Crews checked nearby walls and cabinets for hidden flames. The fire was confined to the area surrounding the oven.
An on-scene investigator determined that the fire was accidental.
As fire season is at its peak, the Santa Cruz Fire Department reminds residents to make sure they continuously check their fire detectors to make sure they work. With the Fourth of July approaching visit the Cal Fire website for safety information on peak fire season.
