GO TO THIS: LOOKOUT FILM SCREENING “STRIPPED FOR PARTS”
In today’s newsletter, I’m taking a brief break from sharing the best from our food and drink scene to invite you to an event next week that discusses the importance of community news.
On Wednesday, Lookout and CalMatters are hosting a screening of “Stripped For Parts: American Journalism on the Brink,” a film that chronicles the damage caused by hedge fund ownership of once-proud community newspapers. This issue is widespread nationwide and has led to the demise or dysfunction of many papers, including some in Santa Cruz County.
After the film at downtown’s Del Mar Theatre, Lookout CEO Ken Doctor, CalMatters CEO Neil Chase and Voices of Monterey Bay co-founder Julie Reynolds will lead a discussion with the audience about what’s next for news in California and Santa Cruz, and the future of sustainable journalism.
This event kicks off Lookout’s fundraising efforts as we get ready to celebrate five years serving Santa Cruz County. Each $50 ticket includes a small drink and popcorn. Get tickets here.
Join me for the final stop on the Extra Tasty Tour
The final event of Collective Santa Cruz’s Extra Tasty Tour is the Super Salty Hella Malty Taste Güd Fest, a salty-themed food and craft festival held at Humble Sea Brewing Co.’s Westside Santa Cruz brewery on Saturday, Sept. 27. Before the event starts at 11 a.m., I’m leading a behind-the-scenes tasting tour with five local vendors, with samples from Square Cakes, Tony’s House of Smoke, Coffee Conspiracy Co. and more. This special tasting is open only to Lookout members, with just 12 spots available. Get your ticket here.
