Hillary Ojeda has an update from Cabrillo College, where, with the name-change debate tabled until at least 2028, administrators are turning to initiatives for Indigenous students and Native American studies.

Ahead of her Eaters Digest newsletter, Lily Belli takes us to The Grove in Felton, where chef Jessica Yarr is giving vegan dishes pride of place.

And Lookout photojournalist Kevin Painchaud goes inside the process at Annieglass, tracing founder Annie Morhauser’s long history in Santa Cruz County and her journey.

On Thursday, about 60 volunteers visited the Live Oak headquarters of Grey Bears to help pack up 2,000 bags of food and oral care health supplies to be handed out to Santa Cruz residents 55 years and older. Grey Bears is a Santa Cruz nonprofit that provides food, meal deliveries and other services to the region’s older adults. The organization is also starting to include oral health care and education provided by Dientes as part of its offerings. Dientes is a nonprofit dental care clinic that focuses on providing oral health care to low-income children, adults and seniors of Santa Cruz County.

And an update from Lookout founder Ken Doctor:

At Lookout, we’re using our spacious new office to host more community and member events. On Thursday evening, we were glad to have hosted a reception for Clifford Mae Henderson, ahead of her reading from her newly released sixth novel, “Bait and Witch,” at Bookshop Santa Cruz, right across the street.

About 45 people attended the event, enjoying wine and cheese and chatting with the local author alongside Lookout’s Wallace Baine. We are excited to launch this new programming, celebrating local authors before their book talks and encouraging readers to engage with us — and each other — in person at our new office. Stay tuned for more events like this to come.

Yarr’s ‘plant-forward’ menu at The Grove gives vegan options a starring — if not exclusive — role

At The Grove Café and Bakery in Felton, chef Jessica Yarr’s “plant-forward” breakfast and lunch menus put the focus on plant-based foods but include some meat and dairy. Her inclusive food philosophy and recent vegan dinner events have drawn attention from the local vegan community. Get a taste from Lily Belli.
