With the county’s homeless population bracing for the impending closure of nonprofit Housing Matters’ day services, the Santa Cruz City Council is moving to fill the void, Max Chun reports. City, county and Housing Matters officials are working on replacement options, with staff facing an end-of-February deadline for recommendations.

Federal immigration authorities notified local law enforcement agencies about enforcement action in the county 29 times between January and November, Tania Ortiz reports after Lookout’s latest round of public records requests. That includes an operation in the Lower Ocean Street neighborhood of Santa Cruz.

City, county of Santa Cruz formally begin process to replace Housing Matters’ day services

The Santa Cruz City Council moved to form a group of city and county staff members to begin exploring options to replace the day services that homelessness nonprofit Housing Matters is poised to halt at the end of March. Staff are expected to return no later than Feb. 28 with a recommendation. Max Chun has the latest.
