Property code violations

County officials cite property owners for issues such as substandard housing, illegal uses of buildings, property maintenance, abandoned appliances or furniture, construction without permits, and other issues that affect public safety and quality of life.

  • A code violation notice has been issued for the property at 424 Sims Rd, Santa Cruz, under case number NV25228. The violation pertains to an “Unpermitted ADU” (Accessory Dwelling Unit), indicating that an additional dwelling unit was constructed on the property without obtaining the necessary permits from local authorities. Residents are reminded of the importance of securing appropriate permits for any construction projects to ensure compliance with local building codes and regulations.
     

Roadwork is affecting traffic in the region

  • A traffic collision involving two vehicles happened on Highway 1 North at the Freedom Blvd off-ramp in Aptos. Both vehicles were driveable, and there were no injuries. The vehicles were on the right-hand side of the road. The incident was reported today.
     
  • Alternating lanes on South Highway 1 at Soquel Drive are closed for a striping operation. The closure is expected to end at 5:59 a.m. today.
     
  • Alternating lanes on North Highway 1 at 41st Avenue in Capitola/Soquel are closed for a striping operation. The closure is expected to end at 4:59 a.m. today.
     
  • The northbound lanes of Highway 1 at 41st Avenue in Eastside/Live Oak are fully closed for electrical work. The closure is expected to end at 4:59 a.m. today.
     
  • The southbound lanes of Highway 1 at Soquel Drive in Eastside/Live Oak are fully closed for electrical work. The closure is expected to end at 5:59 a.m. today.
     
  • A lane on North / South Highway 9 at Pool Drive in San Lorenzo Valley is closed for electrical work. The closure is expected to end at 1:01 p.m. tomorrow.
     
  • North Highway 9 at Pool Drive in San Lorenzo Valley is currently closed for emergency work. The closure is expected to end at 3:01 p.m. tomorrow.
     

Restaurant inspections

County officials regularly inspect food facilities to ensure compliance with state laws. Here, Lookout Santa Cruz reports both those who have passed the inspections and those that the county deems to have a “major” issue. The county’s full ongoing report can be accessed here.

  • Otoro Sushi at 235 Mt Hermon Rd Ste G, Scotts Valley, passed a county health inspection on Mar. 28 with no critical issues.
