This Saturday, the Santa Cruz Police Department will hold Pedal in the Park, a free community biking event. The outdoor celebration at Depot Park offers a variety of engaging activities for all ages, from rides to giveaways.

The event is the product of a partnership between SCPD and Modo, the transportation branch of Santa Cruz nonprofit Ecology Action. Twenty other local businesses and nonprofits will also be contributing the the free community event.

Families can enjoy Modo’s guided, scenic bike rides along low-stress routes through Westside Santa Cruz. Bikers will learn skills like hand signaling, navigating intersections, trail etiquette and more.

For a more challenging ride, attendees can try skill-building obstacle courses and bike rodeos for all ages.

The event will also offer free helmets while supplies last. One lucky attendee will even get a chance to win a brand-new bike.

“We believe in fostering a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone to bike and move around,” said Juan Castillo, Modo’s program manager. “Partnering with SCPD highlights the importance of safer streets for the community and showcases how innovative partnerships can make it possible.”

“Our officers are not just here to keep you safe — they’re also parents, cyclists, and neighbors who love to ride. We’re excited to join you in making Santa Cruz’s streets safer and more welcoming, “ added SCPD Lt. Wes Morey.

Pedal in the Park will run from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday at Depot Park, 119 Center St., Santa Cruz. Attendance is free. For more information, visit Modo’s website
