Santa Cruz Roller Derby was founded in 2006 during the modern revival of roller derby in the United States. Like many leagues of that era, it began as a skater-owned, DIY organization built by local athletes who were drawn to the sport’s mix of competition, creativity and community.
Over time, the league expanded to include multiple teams, training opportunities for new skaters, and community outreach. It built a reputation not only for hard-hitting, fast-paced play but also for fostering an inclusive environment that welcomes skaters of diverse identities and skill levels.
Today, Santa Cruz Roller Derby remains an active part of the Central Coast sports scene, continuing its tradition of athlete-run leadership, competitive play and strong ties to the local community.
