This May, the Santa Cruz Symphony is preparing to close its 2024–25 classical concert series with a powerful and emotionally charged finale. On May 3 and 4, the Symphony will take the stage alongside the Cabrillo Symphonic Chorus and four stellar vocalists to perform one of the most iconic works in classical music history—Mozart’s Requiem in D Minor.

Maestro Daniel Stewart leads the charge, not only conducting Mozart’s final masterpiece but also bringing fresh creative energy to the program. He has arranged a bold new version of Björk’s “Overture to Dancer in the Dark”, reimagining the Icelandic pop icon’s melodies through a symphonic lens. Then, in a world premiere, Maestro Stewart unveils Lux Perpetua, his own original composition, written to showcase the full harmonic and emotional range of the human voice.

The Cabrillo Symphonic Chorus, under the direction of Cheryl Anderson, will bring these works to life with breathtaking vocal power. These concerts mark a milestone: they will be Anderson’s final appearances as Chorus Director, closing her tenure on a high note with music that stirs the soul.
Before the weekend performances, the Symphony invites the community to a free open rehearsal of Mozart’s Requiem on Thursday, May 1 at 7:30 PM at the Civic Auditorium in Santa Cruz. Doors open at 7 PM—no reservations required.

The series finale then begins in earnest on Saturday, May 3 at 7:30 PM at the Civic Auditorium in Santa Cruz. Arrive early for a pre-concert talk at 6:30 PM (doors open at 6:15 PM).
