The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a remote-controlled aircraft crashed into a home, injuring two people during the Fire in the Sky Open House at the Watsonville Municipal Airport over the long weekend.
At around 7:02 p.m. on Saturday, a remote-controlled aircraft veered off course and hit two adults outside of a home along Buena Vista Drive, according to a statement from the City of Watsonville. The crash also damaged the outside of the victims’ residence.
The two victims were taken to a hospital. One sustained moderate injuries, while the other sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries.
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office did not return Lookout’s request for comment regarding what it is investigating and the current status of the victims.
The Fire in the Sky Open House is a city-sponsored event held annually over Labor Day weekend at the Watsonville airport. It celebrates Watsonville’s history and focuses on the region’s aviation activities, complete with flyovers, parachute jumps and live music.
