The trial in the murder case of a tech executive and cannabis entrepreneur Tushar Atre is tentatively set to begin in March 2024. On Monday, an attorney for Kaleb Charters, one of the four men charged in Atre’s kidnapping and murder, challenged DNA evidence and law enforcement statements. Santa Cruz Superior Court Judge Stephen Siegel ordered a Dec. 4 hearing to review the concerns and determine whether to toss out evidence in the case.

Live Oak School District, seniors services clash over ‘illegal’ requirement to support teacher housing bond
Negotiations between Live Oak School District and two local seniors organizations renting a district-owned property have hit a roadblock over the district’s requirement that the organizations publicly endorse a bond measure for teacher housing as part of the lease agreement. Community Bridges, which runs Meals on Wheels out of the building, has called the demand illegal and a violation of the California Education Code. The district says the requirement is a response to comments by Community Bridges staff that they would campaign against the bond unless the district agreed to the organization’s lease terms.

Judge in Tushar Atre murder case rejects defense effort to challenge surveillance-footage search warrant
The attorney for one of the defendants, Stephen Lindsay, argued Wednesday that Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office investigators made misleading statements in a search warrant for surveillance footage from a Las Vegas gym. Prosecutors say that footage matches the appearances of Lindsay and another suspect with those of figures captured in surveillance footage from near Atre’s Pleasure Point residence around the time Atre was killed in October 2019.
