UCSC updates maintenance system, offers rent credit over Family Student Housing concerns

Almost two months after UC Santa Cruz Family Student Housing residents demanded that the university address housing conditions and waive a rent increase, housing officials said they will provide a one-time credit toward rent but won’t rescind the annual increase. They also say they’re changing how they respond to maintenance requests.

Family Student Housing tenants say UC Santa Cruz slow to address rent hike, mold problems

Tenants of an aging Family Student Housing complex at UC Santa Cruz say the university has yet to respond to their request more than a month ago that a rent increase be rescinded as they continue to deal with problems of mold, termites and other maintenance issues. A UCSC official is promising more transparency this fall about how the complex will be maintained during the wait for the opening of a new Family Student Housing facility under construction on campus.

Mold, asthma and a rent increase vex UCSC Family Student Housing tenants

Residents of an aging student family housing complex at UC Santa Cruz are fighting a $65-a-month rent increase while demanding that something be done about mold problems and other issues they claim are contributing to asthma and other health problems. The issues come more than a year away from the opening of an under-construction replacement for the complex and the demolition of existing apartments to make way for 2,700 new dorm-style units for undergraduate housing.
