With construction underway on the downtown Santa Cruz library/affordable housing project, the city is inviting the public to help celebrate the milestone with a groundbreaking ceremony next Wednesday, Aug. 20.
Residents are asked to RSVP here for the event, which will take place at noon at 710 Cedar St. in Lot 8, across Lincoln Street from the future home of the library on Lot 4.
Speakers at the event will include Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley; Bonnie Lipscomb, deputy city manager and economic development director; Jennifer Panetta, executive director of the city’s housing authority; Elaine Johnson, executive director of nonprofit Housing Santa Cruz County; and representatives of Eden Housing and For the Future Housing, which are jointly developing the site.
The multi-story building will feature 124 units, from studios to three bedrooms, a child care facility, commercial space and parking, and the new library.
“This project is a testament to what can happen when a community comes together with a shared vision to integrate needed services in a holistic way,” Linda Mandolini, president and CEO of Eden Housing, said in a media release. “We believe this will serve as a model for stronger, more connected communities, and we are grateful for the deep collaboration and unwavering support from a broad coalition that includes our local, state and federal elected officials, funding partners and the local community.”
