A Soquel man was killed in an electric bike crash on Manfre Road in Watsonville on Wednesday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At about 1:32 p.m., CHP officers responded to a crash on the South County road to the east of Larkin Valley Road. A 78-year-old man from Soquel was riding a Specialized Level 3 electric bicycle — the most powerful level of e-bike — east on Manfre Road, when he veered off the road and crashed into a dirt embankment. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

It is unclear if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, and the cause of the accident is still under investigation.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to Lookout’s request for the victim’s identity.
