Here they are, nine necessary know-abouts for the week ahead. It’s the school’s-starting-already? B9:

  1. The next 10 days in Aptos and Watsonville are all about folklorico dancing, as a troupe of professional dancers from Veracruz open the festival with performances from traditions all over Mexico.
  2. Talking Heads fans rejoice. TH keyboardist/guitarist Jerry Harrison teams up with the brilliant Adrian Belew to re-create the classic album “Remain in Light.”
  3. No city in North America has a more distinct and elegant musical legacy than New Orleans, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band brings NOLA with them wherever they go.
  4. One is a virtuoso of the quintessential bluegrass instrument the dobro, the other is a remarkably expressive country singer. Isn’t it about time you’ve discovered Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley?
  5. The artist known as Son Little engages in a kind of old-school R&B/acoustic folk that takes you back to the Bill Withers/Johnnie Taylor era. A real talent.
  6. Spread the word: Blues master Mighty Mike Schermer is back in town, and he’s bringing his stellar musicianship to a new sound
  7. Personally, I prefer the name “Jack” over “Earnest,” but I gotta draw the line at “Algernon.” Of course, Oscar Wilde knows best. Let’s trust him.
  8. Navajo Nation history and culture meets jazz in the person of Delbert Anderson and his quartet, coming to Kuumbwa on Friday.
  9. Hey, it’s still summer, y’know. How ’bout enjoy festival season with a visit to Scotts Valley for wine, beer, art, cars and even dogs?
