Santa Cruz Public Libraries will mark the four-year anniversary of the CZU Lightning Complex fire from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Felton Branch Library with the “Heavy Lift Listening Tour,” an interactive poetry and storytelling event featuring artist Felicia Rice and poet Theresa Whitehill.
The Heavy Lifting Tour began in February 2023 in Ukiah and has been held monthly in communities affected by wildfires throughout Northern California.
It “explores a range of responses to loss as it considers what might lie beyond these difficult times, from creating space to name the darkness as the first stage of recovery from grief to building strength to tackle the unending work ahead.”
The program will include a display of a book by Rice, a celebrated Santa Cruz book artist and typographer, and a showing of the experimental film, “On Heavy Lifting,” followed by a conversation between Whitehill and the audience in which she reads her poetry and audience members are invited to share their own work or stories in response.
