The Capitola Police Department seized a Talaria e-bike Saturday they said was not street safe after the rider, a boy, evaded the police.
On New Year’s Eve, police say the rider of a Talaria e-bike failed to yield to an enforcement stop on Clares Street. Officers attempted a brief pursuit of the bike, but ended that out of safety concerns for the driver and traffic conditions, police said.
After investigation, CPD was able to identify the vehicle and the suspect, a juvenile male, who has since been charged with felony evading and reckless driving.
In a photo shared by Capitola police on Facebook, the e-bike appeared to be a black Talaria model XXX – a bike that manufacturer Luna Cycle describes on its website as intended for off-road use.
Capitola police said that this type of e-bike is neither street legal nor safe. They added that the bike had been modified to reach speeds more than double the stock limit. Police said they impounded the bike for 30 days.
