Strong winds and low overnight temperatures are expected across Santa Cruz County on Saturday through Tuesday. The cold front could affect sensitive residents and be hazardous for people who are unhoused.
Strong winds and low overnight temperatures are expected from Saturday through Tuesday in Santa Cruz County.
The National Weather Service warned in a news release Friday that residents will experience frigid overnight temperatures in the mid-to-upper 30s and strong winds over the next few days. Higher elevation winds will be 20-30 mph with gusts to 50 mph and lower elevation winds are expected to be 10-15 mph.
Those strong winds will affect the county on Saturday and Sunday. Residents should secure loose objects to prevent them from being blown away over the weekend. The strong winds could make for difficult conditions for drivers of tall vehicles, and raise the risk of falling trees.
Low overnight temperatures could damage sensitive plants and pose a risk to vulnerable residents.
Housing for Health and Santa Cruz County are planning to open overnight emergency severe weather shelters for the unhoused in Santa Cruz and Watsonville.
Shelters at the veterans halls in Santa Cruz and Watsonville will open for overnight services at 8 p.m. on Sunday and remain open through Tuesday morning.
The lineup for the beds will begin at 7 p.m. each day, and the shelters will close at 8 a.m. each morning.
Shelters operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Food will be served after intake and bed assignments.
Organizers said they will give priority to people with disabilities and health or safety risks. Well-behaved pets under voice control are also allowed. Belongings must fit in the small storage area provided.
The two shelters will be located at:
| Santa Cruz Veterans Memorial Building 846 Front St. Santa Cruz | Watsonville Veterans Memorial Building 215 East Beach St. Watsonville |
