A man walking along Highway 1 north of Santa Cruz early Thursday was struck and killed by a pickup truck, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The accident occurred at approximately 4:22 a.m. on Highway 1 south of Scaroni Road, approximately 4 miles outside the city limits, amid a stormy stretch that prompted flash flood warnings throughout Santa Cruz County. A 52-year-old male driving a black 2005 Ford Ranger hit the pedestrian, whom CHP described as a male between 30 and 40 years old. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining major injuries. Neither man was identified.

The accident shut down Highway 1 for several hours, and was still under investigation as of Thursday afternoon. The CHP urges anyone with potentially helpful information to call 831-796-2160.
