There is some talk of the Regional Transportation Commission allowing the City of Santa Cruz to build an interim trail on the rail bridge spanning the yacht harbor. While the idea is sound, to do a study, obtain permits, clear California Coastal Commission requirements, design plans and actually fund the thing will take who knows how long. Meanwhile, the completely intact rails, which were used for the clean electric rail vehicle demonstration in 2021, are sitting, already existing and needing only a rail vehicle and approval from the rail operator.

If the goal is to move pedestrians from the Seabright side to 7th Avenue, would it not suffice for the rails to be utilized? It likely would become an attraction in itself, drawing folks to the businesses that are currently suffering a considerable decline in revenue. As a plus, it gets folks onto a potential public transit alternative, which we all know has been sorely needed in our county for decades now.
