Watsonville police arrested a 17-year-old who fled from a traffic stop on Monday night, according to a social media post from the department.

At around 11 p.m., officers stopped a silver Honda Civic at Sixth Street and Walker Streets. The department’s public information officer, Michelle Pulido, said officers pulled the car over because its rear license plate lights were not functioning.

As the car came to a stop, a 17-year-old jumped out and ran away, while officers ordered him to stop. Officers caught up to him a short distance away.

During a search of the area, officers found a loaded pistol without a serial number and cocaine.

Pulido said based on previous information and documentation, officers believe the teen is a suspected gang member.

The teenager was taken into custody and booked into juvenile hall on charges related to firearm possession, drugs and resisting arrest.

The driver of the Honda and a second passenger remain outstanding.

Officers will not release the identity of the 17-year-old because he is a minor.
