The City of Watsonville has chosen Corey Schaefer, a 27-year fire department veteran, as its next chief, following the retirement of Rudy López who had been at the helm since 2019.

Schaefer was first hired by the department in 1998 as a reserve firefighter. He rose through the ranks, serving as a firefighter, fire captain, division and battalion chief. In August, he was named acting fire chief.

“This is a remarkable organization with a rich history dating back to 1861, and as we honor that legacy, we will continue to advance to meet the modern challenges of firefighting.,” Schaefer said in Monday’s media release. “I greatly respect the relationships I share with our community, city staff, and firefighters who serve 24/7.”

He was among the first group of firefighter-paramedics hired when the department expanded emergency medical care services in 2002. The program integrated paramedic services into the fire department’s emergency response to offer medical care before an ambulance shows up to a scene.

“After a thoughtful and thorough recruitment process, Corey emerged as the clear choice to lead the department,” said City Manager Tamara Vides in the release. “His commitment to our firefighters, our organization, and the Watsonville community makes him the right fit for this role.”

Schaefer will officially begin his new role on Jan. 1.
