Santa Cruz County is looking for an artist to create a site-specific public art piece for the new restroom building at Hidden Beach County Park in Aptos.
Hidden Beach Park is located at 660 Cliff Dr. and provides a beach-adjacent playground, picnic tables and benches, lawn area and scenic overlook.
It’s been served by a single-user porta-potty, which has become inadequate as the park and nearby beach have grown in popularity. With a grant from the California State Coastal Conservancy, a permanent, accessible, two-unit restroom will be installed in early 2025 with flushing toilets and sinks with running water.
The budget includes $11,500 for artwork that “should enhance the experience of park and beach visitors of all ages,” the county said in a release. It’s looking for proposals that would use the exterior walls of the restroom building to display a mural, mosaic or low-relief sculpture. “In addition, artists may choose to propose additional, related, wayfinding artwork along the pathway that connects the restroom building to the beach,” the county said, and “all proposal imagery must reflect the coastal setting.”
Detailed information about the request-for-proposal process, a sample contract and installation locations and dimensions are available on the county parks website. The deadline for submitting a proposal is Nov. 8.
