The Lookout Editorial Board endorses Krista Jett, John Lewis and Donna Lind for Scotts Valley City Council. We think the city needs both experience and new ideas.

A Lookout View: Kristen Brown for District 2 county supervisor
In the race for District 2 Santa Cruz County supervisor, the Lookout Editorial Board believes that both Kristen Brown and Kim De Serpa would serve well on the county board. However, like our voters, we are forced to make a choice. In this race, we favor Kristen Brown. We believe her experience with different levels of government, her discipline and ability to command facts and a room and her deep connections to the other supervisors and local politicians make her the slightly better choice.
A Lookout View: Monica Martinez for District 5 county supervisor
Editor’s note: A Lookout View is the opinion of our Community Voices opinion section, written by our editorial board, which consists of Community Voices Editor Jody K. Biehl and Lookout Founder Ken Doctor. Our goal is to connect the dots we see in the news and offer a bigger-picture view — all intended to see Santa Cruz […]
A Lookout View: Vote yes on Measure Q and climate resilience
We believe in prevention and girding for resilience, the Lookout Editorial Board writes in urging a yes vote on Measure Q, the Santa Cruz County Water and Wildfire Protection Initiative. We trust the collective will of the local environmental organizations that have guided us for decades and our elected officials to try this experiment in community preparedness.
A Lookout View: Santa Cruz County jails should reinstate contact visits with family
It’s time to bring back contact visits to those incarcerated in our jails. Not allowing face-to-face visits harms families and especially kids, who can’t understand what happened to their parents or loved ones. Our county, which prides itself on forward thinking, needs to side with research and make good on promises by our top elected officials. We know staffing is an issue in our jails, but the sheriff’s department needs to make contact visits a priority.
A Lookout View: Our March 5 endorsements
Lookout’s editorial board explains its reasoning and process for offering endorsements of candidates and ballot measures in the 2024 Santa Cruz County primary election March 5.
A Lookout View: Yes on Measure H — Live Oak School District needs long-term investment
Measure H would allow the flailing Live Oak School District to issue $44 million in bonds, and would cost property owners $30 per $100,000 of assessed property annually for 30 years. It’s hard to trust a school district that has shown such ineptitude, but that funding is what’s needed to support kids, teachers and right the ship.
A Lookout View: On Measure N, a yes to our community and individual health
In about two years, Watsonville Community Hospital has moved from the brink of ruin to point of countywide pride. As Santa Cruz County’s population continues to age faster than the state’s, we need a strong second hospital. This measure makes the hospital, and its parent Pajaro Valley Health Care District, stronger.
A Lookout View: Yes on Measures K and L
Lookout endorses Measures K and L. We know taxes are not popular, but both the county and city of Santa Cruz need these to fund critical programs and services.
A Lookout View: For Santa Cruz City Council, Kalantari-Johnson, Trigueiro, O’Hara and Brunner
We might be at an inflection point as the current city council has mounted a sensible and steady approach in addressing the city’s many issues. In recommending these four women, we look to a next council that will build its achievements – and take the time to figure out a more open engagement and transparency process around planning issues.
